Ideas for tangling and decorating plastic Easter eggs

Angie Vangelis decorates plastic eggsIf you’re still thinking of ways to decorate for Easter this coming weekend, here’s a fun project you might like to try. Maybe even get the kids (all ages) involved.

In this 4-minute video produced by Sakura, CZT Angie Vangelis (“Vangallas from Dallas”) shares a couple of ideas for decorating plastic Easter eggs and “you don’t have to mess with any dyes”.

I noticed that this week Michael’s has a sale on the plastic Easter eggs so you might still be able to take advantage after being inspired by Angie’s suggestions.

In her first example (0:12), Angie shows a plastic egg she tangled with a regular Sakura Micron 02 size pen, then used a Sakura Koi Watercolor Brush Pen to add a large area of color inside the tangled design. While the watercolor was still wet, Angie smoothed it around with the wet bristles of a Koi Water Brush. When that whole area dried completely Angie tangled over it with a Sakura Gelly Roll Moonlight Pen.

On the second egg (0:56), Angie demonstrates that using a Clear Sakura 3D Glaze Pen to tangle on plastic Easter eggs produces a lovely resist effect when combined with Sakura’s Koi Watercolor Brush Pens pens. The egg is first tangled with the Clear Glaze pen. When it dries, Angie takes a Watercolor Brush pen and “slathers on some color” to reveal the tangled designs then switches to the Koi Water Brush and smooths the still wet watercolor around the egg. She suggests layering with additional color with the the Waterbrush Pens and blending those colors in too.

For her third example (2:43) of applying design to these plastic eggs, Angie shows how to create sweet colored Posies using Sakura Gelly Roll Moonlight Pens. First she makes a triangle of three small dots of Moonlight ink, then before the ink dries she uses the Water Brush bristles to pull out “a nice little petal” shape from each dot of ink. “When it dries it’ll be a nice soft little flower.”

Have fun, and thanks a dozen for the egg-tangling time, Angie and Sakura!

PS – From “How to draw HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS” comes this tip from CZT Bonnie Brown, “the quilting tangler”: if you want to add a band of design (or color) she suggests using rubber bands to help place your string. Drawing at Zentangle® scale on a curved (and delicate) surface is definitely for the patient and adventurous!

THANKS ANGIE FOR THE EASTER EGG TANGLING, I LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY ABOUT TANGLING.

How did she get the eggs white? When I think plastic Easter eggs, I’m thinking about the kind you put candy in and let the kids find. Are these different? If they are painted white, wouldn’t that ruin the micron?

  • Such a shame these lovely brush pens are not for sale in the Netherlands. 🙁 and Amazon.com does not send overseas 🙁

      Ellen,
Zelfde probleem.

Thank you Angie. What a good idea. Ellen, my sister purchased her brush pens from Hobby Lobby. I do not know if they ship overseas, but you might try going on line and checking it out. Good luck! Thanks again Angie for sharing!

Tried to do this but everything smeared! Using Sakura micron pen just rubbed right off. Wondering how Angie got hers to stick?

  • Thank you very much for this informative video. I have never painted on eggs but now I wanna give it a try!
