How to draw DA’DEAL

Zentangle pattern: Da'Deal. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. This pretty grid-based tangle pattern is from Canadian CZT Nancy Dawes and she calls it Da’Deal. Nancy is from Courtenay, a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

Nancy deconstructed this tangle as part of her homework at CZT 13 last Fall. Her inspiration for Da’Deal, which has similarities with 4 Corners and Flourish, was “a section of carpet at a hotel in Vancouver, BC” where she was attending a conference right before her CZT training seminar. She explains:

The name came from my frustration learning how to deconstruct an image.  It took me about six tries to figure out how to make it an easy Tangle and my roommate said that I kept saying ‘what’s the deal’ each time I grabbed a new sheet of paper.  So that is why it is called da’Deal.

Here are Nancy’s steps for creating Da’Deal and a completed Zentangle® along with some official tangle patterns you may recognize.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. This is a beautiful design. The alternate patterns are very nice as well. I love the way Nancy came up with the name of the pattern. Thank you for sharing!
