How to draw RIPPLES

Zentangle pattern: Ripples. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Australia’s Helen Williams created the grid-based tangle pattern she calls Ripples.

Inspired by drawing while listening to Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Helen writes,

This started off as trying to fit Sandy Hunter’s fabulous pattern, Cruffle (one of my absolute faves) into a square.  … You can get some neat effects by the way you fill it, or if you switch the direction of the initial s shaped lines, too.

Helen doesn’t “do” Zentangle® per se, but her large Zentangle-inspired and pen and ink drawings are so lovely to enjoy and appreciate. And every now and again she comes up with a pattern to share. Helen illustrates the steps-by-step instructions for drawing Ripples here on her blog. Be sure to have a good look around at her creations.

Check out the tag helenw for more of Helen’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

What a brilliant idea! When I looked at the finished tangle I just couldn’t imagine how to do it, but the steps are so simple.. DEFINITELY will use it a lot, with Cruffle already being a huge favourite of mine (as well 🙂 ). Cant wait to play with it!

    Hi Linda,
I found Zentangle late Spring 2013, while shopping at Craftwherehouse in Gresham Oregon. I was instantly hooked, so I went online and I found your site. I’ve taken 1 zentangle class and am looking forward to taking more. I love your site and look forward to each new zentangle or string. I’m planning on sending you a donation, but first need to get out of the hospital, and back to my debit card, until then once again a BIG thank you to you and your site….keep up the great work!

I like cruffles so doing ripples was easy to pick up. I really enjoyed this one. Great adaptation!
