How to draw ORBS-LA-DEE

Zentangle pattern: Orbs-la-Dee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. This fun bubble-like tangle pattern, Orbs-la-Dee, comes to us from tangler Anneke van Dam, from “a little village near Rotterdam, the Netherlands.” This is her first pattern on the site.

Zentangle® is very popular throughout the Netherlands and currently there are three CZTs there: Ellen Gozeling (Sassenheim), Arja de Lange-Huisman (Gouda), and Maria Vennekens (Venray). The link for the list of Certified Zentangle Teachers is always located in the left sidebar under the heading SOURCE WEBSITES, and you can find their contact information on that page.

While it may look complicated Orbs-la-Dee is simple to draw. It starts with an ogee-shaped grid and if you’d like some assistance on drawing one, I recently added a tutorial on grids here. It includes a free PDF of the steps for you to download.

Anneke illustrates the steps for drawing Orbs-la-Dee here on her blog.

In Step 7 Anneke’s instructions indicate to add rounding, but what she meant is to add shading to create contour. Rounding is something completely different in Zentangle terminology, you can see an example of rounding here in Stage 2 of CZT Marizaan van Beek’s Shading tutorial.

Check out the tag annekevd for more of Anneke’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

The name of this tangle freaked me out today!!!! Ladee is my nickname…… I feel honored, tho the creator has no idea who I am…. lol ….

  • Thanks. I used this one is a tangle today. 😀

  • Linda, thank you so much for introducing my tangle pattern! You’re absolutely right to explain the difference between shading and rounding! Just a few weeks ago I discovered on Shelly’s blog what rounding really is. Thought I had enough time to adjust my post, but then it completely slipped my mind…. Wishing everyone Happy Tangling with Orbs-la-Dee!

Hi Tracy, scanning your art is much better than digital photos. Be sure to see the SUBMIT YOUR PATTERN page located on the top menu bar for more details. Thanks!

  • This is for those who don’t have a digital camera or a scanner at home but might work in an office (or they might have one at a library).

The copy machine in my department at work has a feature that will scan and save to PDF, JPG, or TIF format, and then you can email it to yourself as an attachment. Then the file can be edited from there if need be (cropped, contrast shifted, straightened/rotated, etc).

I love this tangle – I’ve been doing it over and over. Very fun to draw.
