How to draw YEW-DEE

Zentangle pattern: Yew-Dee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. Peg was among my CZT#7 colleagues and she writes, “I get called Linda every once in a while, but I am quick to let them know that I am not the TanglePatterns person! When they ask if we are related, I tell them that we are related by Zentangle.  🙂 ” We definitely are!

Peg has actually taken the certification class twice, “been tangling since late 2009, became a CZT in May 2010, and training with Rick and Maria was so much fun that Carole Ohl and I did it again in October, 2011.”

The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. You know how in a magic trick the presenter holds up two separate rings and then dramatically smashes them together and they become interlocked? Yew-Dee looks to me as if a magician held Bales in one hand and W2 in the other – then magically mashes them together into one. And what a great result!

In fact Peg developed Yew-Dee while teaching Bales:

I teach Zentangle® at the University of Dayton’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (UDLLI), a wonderful program for people ages 50 and over, in Dayton, Ohio.  This pattern evolved for me one class while I was teaching Rick and Maria’s original pattern, Bales.  I named it Yew-Dee in honor of UDLLI.

Peg purposely underlines the second syllable of its name so it’s pronounced with the emphasis on the Dee, “I didn’t want it to sound like ud.”

I love the classy look of Yew-Dee, and it really shines when you add shading.

Here are Peg’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Yew-Dee and some examples of variations for you to try.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
