How to draw LUCKY

The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.CZT® Adele Bruno sent along her Lucky tangle pattern just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, noting “…we are all a wee bit Irish on that day!

Previous tangles celebrating the “Luck o’ the Irish” have been Sh’rock by CZT Diane Lachance, Sláinte by Kate McIlreavy, and Lukiline by CZT Mary Masi.

The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Lucky is a very pretty tangle that starts with a slanted grid. The next strokes create the stylized shamrock-like trefoil motifs within the grid. In Adele’s version the trefoils all have the same orientation, here in my experiment on the right I played with alternating the rows so there’s no “right side up”.

One tip I have for this tangle is to think of the trefoil as reaching its “arms” horizontally to touch the one beside it. That helps with aligning and placing them in the right spot in the grid … so Lucky doesn’t end up Messy. Unless you want a random look and that works too!

In Adele’s steps below she illustrates Lucky and several variations for you to try. She also included two lovely monotangles with explanations below.

Steps for Adele Bruno's "Lucky" tangle pattern

The first monotangle was completed on a single grid with a clover shaped string.  I only embellished the pattern within the inner string and added green colored pencil.

The second monotangle was divided into three sections by the string and each section has a different variation of the tangle. That inspiration came from Sandy Bartholomew’s TOTALLY TANGLED book, page 11 where she illustrates different patterns on one grid divided by a loopy string.” This fun technique with the string Adele illustrates below is something you can use any time.

Enjoy all these lucky tangles and have a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day weekend!
