How to draw LOBLOLLY

Zentangle pattern: Loblolly. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Loblolly is a tangle from South Dakota tangler Holly Moseley and it’s her first on the site.

Not to be confused with the Loblolly Pine prevalent here in the southeast US, this tangle has Holly’s invented name: “Inspired by a design on a sign at Red Lobster. It took me a while to deconstruct, but what fun when it came together so simply. … I love the way Loblolly fills in its own space. Sometimes the pentagon (or birdhouse, as mine usually appear) shapes come together oddly … it still looks good!

If you choose to fill in the background in Loblolly as I did here, it provides a great opportunity to get out your 08 or the bullet-tip Graphic 1 Micron and save the ink in your 01. If you do use the larger nib pens remember to be careful of smudging because the ink dries more slowly with those pens.

I was very tempted to use my white Sakura Gelly Roll to embellish the background – which I might still do yet. But the stark simplicity of Loblolly is very nice for a change too. There are lots of ways to play with this tangle pattern, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one.

Holly illustrates the steps for drawing Loblolly below and uses it in her completed Zentangle below.

So cute! It’s nice to have a 5-sided design that is not a star. I sort of like the look of the last step in the instruction that has a border around the edge, too. That could be nice on the white background.

  • Very nice tangle, Holly!

I found it kind of cute that Linda put a link to the words South Dakota, which I clicked on, and it goes to a map of the US and South Dakota is highlighted–I guess that’s for those who don’t have an inkling of where it is, which maybe there are many. It never would have occurred to me to include that. 🙂 (I knew where it was as I was Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota but now live in the neighboring state of Minnesota (in Minneapolis). On that Map, it’s just to the right of S.D., and also extending up to border Canada. Just sayin’, for anyone curious. 🙂 🙂

p.s. I just love this Site, and recently made a donation, and received Linda’s PDF booklet/index of Tangles. I have it open and at the ready whenever I sit down to tangle. It is indispensible for me! Thanks Linda! I hope many more will donate to keep this wonderful site thriving.

  • Hi Holly from South Dakota!!! So fun to see someone I had in a class get a tangle published! I love this tangle and look forward to playing with it. Happy to see you are still tangling! 🙂 Sue
