How to draw KHIRKEE

Zentangle pattern: Khirkee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Khirkee is a tangle from Claire Warner, “a Brit living abroad in India” and it’s her first on the site.

Claire lives in the seaport city of Mumbai – also known as Bombay – on the west coast of India. Mumbai is the fourth largest city in the world with a population of 20.5 million in the metropolitan area. The Wikipedia entry makes Mumbai sound like quite the happening place.

Claire calls her tangle Khirkee,

which is the Hindi word for window. I live in a large compound with many tower blocks and this is the pattern of the grills at the windows. I see it all the time, and when I started dreaming about it I knew it was time to deconstruct it!

Khirkee is a grid-based tangle pattern and surprisingly adaptable. I’ve taken some liberties and played with Claire’s basic pattern with solid fills and embellishments. On her blog she shows several more fun ways to vary it with shading and other fill options.

I’ve been living in Mumbai, India for nearly 6 years now. I discovered Zentangle back at the end of 2010, but only recently started to get into it more seriously. My crazy (but gorgeous) chocolate Labrador, affectionately known as Coco Poco Loco, inspired the name of my blog – Coco Zen Loco.

Claire illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing her Khirkee tangle pattern here on her blog where she also show Khirkee in action in several Zentangles.

Check out the tag clairew for more of Claire’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

  • Hi Linda – and may I wish you a very Happy Diwali!
I woke up today to find lots of emails on my phone and quickly realised that this post was responsible for generating many of them. I feel the love today – thank you for that!
I think Goddess Lakshmi played a role in this timing. Today is the day when Lakshmi, Goddess of Wealth, is worshipped, and all the window grills that inspired Khirkee are decorated with lights! Claire
