How to draw SPOOLZ

Zentangle pattern: SpoolzSpoolz is a tangle pattern by Mississippi tangler-knitter-beader, Cindy Straight, creator of the lovely Warts and Wobbles tangle.

Cindy writes that she “Found this nice journal in the trading stamp section of wally world…of course it had to have a tangled cover.  My new motto…”Leave nothing Un-Tangled!

Spoolz was “hatched” when she was attempting to draw Livia Chua’s Warped Eggs, “and got really lost. It was the last piece in the  cover for a little album. In my attempts to fix it ‘Spoolz’ was born.

Like Warped Eggs, Spoolz starts out with a grid of pen dots that soon get incorporated into the design. My example here is a variation of Cindy’s basic tangle and includes some shading as well. For this one I pulled out my 05 Micron for the fills and for restating the original arcs. That turned out to be a good way to even out the circles a bit.

Cindy illustrates her step-by-step instructions for drawing Spoolz, here. Cindy includes several other variations of Spoolz and her Zentangle-inspired album cover art where Spoolz was born.
