How to draw SONNENBAND

Zentangle pattern: Sonnenband. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. This interesting tangle pattern, Sonnenband, comes to us from Simone Bischoff of Essen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia on the River Ruhr in Germany. It’s her first tangle on the site.

From what I can gather using Google Translate, Simone once posted this pattern on a forum that no longer exists so she decided to post it on her site. The pattern, roughly translated (tangl-ated) is “sun bands”. Bands of sun, makes sense. I admit to taking liberties with Simone’s pattern, adding some shading for dimension and “punching up” the sun outlines. Can’t resist tinkering … This is a fun tangle to draw.

Simone and I have been corresponding (using Google Translate), and I invited her to tell us a little about herself.

I am a 48-year-old mother of four children and already a grandmother. I am a teacher of art and literature and have made my passions the occupation. One year ago I discovered the drawing of patterns in pictures for myself and have perfected step by step for myself. In the meantime, a small, but fine group has also formed in Germany which maintains this new hobby and grows steadily.

I find miraculous that thereby so many nice international connections develop.”

I agree, isn’t it amazing the links and friendships Zentangle® is forging around our gorgeous little planet.

Simone illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing her Sonnenband tangle here.

In a world of computer-generated art, it’s so nice and refreshing to see all these beautiful drawings, DONE BY HAND! On the flip side, the convenience of computers and the internet certainly helps us view all these wonderful works of art.

    Hi Linda,
Sorry I don’t have a comment about Sonnenband (well, I do but that’s not the reason I am posting).
I just received my Zendala kit and I am STOKED!
Thanks so much for getting this to me.
    All the best.

Nice tangle; need some new patterns to draw. I’ve been tangling for a year. My latest project is tangling the hand outlines of everyone in my family and framing each one. The little baby’s hands are so cute!

It will take me a while to do it, I have over 45 people who shared their hands with me.

    Hugs, Carmen L

  • Another beautiful tangle! This is so pretty, it’s hard to believe it can be done simply and one step at a time, but it truly can! Thanks, Simone and Linda.

Since you can communicate with Simone, please pass on to her that I have looked at her website several times and think she does amazing work. Her tangles look so three dimensional and her letter tangles are beautiful.

This is a good tangle: It looks complicated but isn’t. That makes it “my” kind of tangle. I don’t like the really simple ones OR the really complicated ones. This is perfect, and thank you for posting it.

  • Thanks to Simone! I love it!
