How to draw ARC FLOWER

Zentangle pattern: Arc Flower. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. The tangle pattern Arc Flower was created by JJ LaBarbera and this is her first on TanglePatterns.

JJ is relatively new to tangling having come across it in December and “now I’m hooked!“, she says.

I live in Wilmington, DE with my Husband and two sons. I want to teach my 10 year old some tangles so that we can tangle together this summer when he says ‘I’m so bored!’

I have a minor in Studio Art from Hollins University in VA although my focus there was photography. I still do the photography along with the tangles. I’m hoping that one day I’ll figure out a way to combine the two. Zentangle has helped me to realize that I can make beautiful drawings by hand even though I’m not one to draw. :)”

If you have Sandy Bartholomew’s book Yoga for Your Brain, Arc Flower is similar to Sandy’s Mumsy tangle. However, they are developed differently and Mumsy is regular in form while Arc Flower is more abstract. They are sufficiently different in end result to be two distinct patterns.

JJ demonstrates the steps for drawing her Arc Flower tangle here.

  • This is fun. I just used it on one of my Diva weekly challenge tiles. Thanks!!

  • Autumn

I love how it overlaps each other!

  • dale

I can not seem to pull up the Arc Flower step by step instuctions please send a link, thank you.

    • Linda Farmer

Hi Dale, the link above works fine – sounds like you may have a browser issue. Try the usual things like clearing out your cache etc.

  • dale

I seem to get all the other step by step instructions all except the Arc Flower!!! PS a discussion on placement of the different tangles would be helpful too. I know the whole idea is to be a free spirit and let it flow but seeing a picture from start to finish would be nice.
Does anyone have a practice sheet to download with 4″x6″ squares?
When I am not delivering babies I find having a journal with my pens ready at hand keeps me relaxed and I have turned some new moms into Zentangle creators for sure…

    Thanks for your response

Dale, I’ve sent you the direct link by email to see if that works for you. I don’t understand what you are asking about re “a discussion on placement of different tangles”??

  • dale

What I mean to say is more of the choosing which tangle you would place in the space of a picture vs another tangle.

hi – so, if arc flower is similar to “Mumsy” but different, where do i find “Mumsy” and how to draw it ?

thanks, I’m new to tangeling – molly z

    • Linda Farmer

Hi Molly, as I mention above Mumsy and its directions are in Sandy Bartholomew’s book, click on the link for the book. Welcome and happy tangling!

I try and learn a new tangle pattern a week and I must say I am really loving this one. Its become one of the patterns I use all the time now. So versatile. I had a friend ask me to do just this pattern for her to put on her wall.

  • Thanks everyone! I’m so glad you enjoy the pattern.

Thanks for Arc. It was the perfect pattern to use for illustrating Shel Silverstein’s poem, The Rainbow Thrower, for a client of mine.

I’m a fellow photographer, and I’m also a card and jewelry artist. I love mixing media and crossing over my hobbies, and you said you’d like to find a way to combine tangling and photography. What comes to mind is taking a photo you like and creating a coordinating tangle ON the photo. Perhaps a shot of a flower with some designs on or around the petals. Another idea would be to create a tangle on acetate and place it over something or in a scene–a tangle of an animal, leaf, whatever comes to mind, and place it on some grass, sand, soil, on a tree trunk… As a photographer, you’ll know which kinds of textures and colors you’ll want to try 🙂 Hope this sparked your creativity as you have sparked mine!
