How to draw FLOREZ

Zentangle pattern: Florez. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Florez is a tangle pattern created by Andrea Shuman, known around here and on flickr as Cookie.

When Cookie sent me her pattern I asked her for a little background about herself. And in her enthusiastic style, I received a complete autobiography! 🙂 Which I shall now attempt to condense  …

Cookie was born and raised in San Francisco CA and lives in Hayward with her husband, Dave. She attended San Francisco City College and studied Commercial Art and Illustration. “I never got a job doing Commercial Art or Illustration, but I did learned more about art I could imagine.”

She has done just about every form of arts and crafts you can name: drawing, crochet, knitting, embroidery, needlepoint, painting with watercolor, oils, acrylics, polymer clay, quilting, papier mache, bookbinding, pyrolysis and the list goes on!

I work for the Department of Defense for the past 30++, but still make money for my crafts occasionally. I use to sell paintings as a teenager and later started selling other crafts like handmade cloth or clay dolls, beadwork, crocheted/ knitted items. I even sold a woven throw about 5 ft square with the 23rd Psalms cross-stitched for a lady. As for the Department of Defense job working for the Navy, that’s just my source of income to pay for my retirement, medical benefits and arts & crafts supplies. This is one Artist that’s not going to starve.

Sharp Cookie!

Cookie’s lovely Art Nouveau-style Florez is kind of a variation of the official Zentangle pattern ‘Nzeppel in how it comes together. It makes an effective overall pattern, and you could adapt it to a border or string too. Cookie illustrates how to draw her tangle pattern Florez here.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. • This is a great pattern…can’t wait to use it!

  • I just ordered two other Zentangle Books. Theone with introducing colors in zentangles and the zentangles in polymer clay.

I ordered Sandy’s new book on Yoga for the Brain and Suzanne McNeal’s 4th Zentangle Book just last week. I should be getting those next week.

I’m so excited about 4 new books.

  • thank you Cookie; yes I have tried your Florez; it’s a lovely pattern (on my last blog-post). I’ve just been Zentangling a couple weeks and looking forward to doing much more

  • Hi, Carole M and thank you for your sweet compliment about the Florez Tangle I designed. I saw your Blog and loved your Zentangle with the Florez in it. I also noticed your whirlygig tangle pattern I’m going to try. Your paper cutting and stamping work are beautiful!

The paper cutting cards are one of my favorites although I nevered done any before. It will be fun to give it a try.

I don’t know how I missed this one, but I just “found” it and I love it. I can see how it’s sort of based on “Nzeppel, but it’s different (simpler? 😀 ). I know I’ll use this one. Thank you for sharing this with us Cookie.
